Insurance is a nightmare at the best of times and when it comes to insuring something out of the ordinary, IE a kit car, specialist insurance is the only way to go.
Parts Only
A difference some people are not aware of with kit insurance is that there is a level of cover available called 'Parts only'. This is as you can probably imagine only insuring the value of the parts and so after an accident you are only paid out for the replacement parts used to fix the car. This is a good way of reducing the cost of your insurance by bareing the risk of having to rebuild it yourself.
Build Up Insurance
Before you actually get to the point of a working road legal car you can insure the parts which make up your kit so in the event of a breakin or fire you get your parts replaced.
Lay Up Insurance
Lay Up Insurance is used when you have a built car but it is off the road, often for winter or for a track only car. This does not entitle you to drive the car on the road.
